What is a CT Scan and Why Do Doctors Recommend It?
A CT (Computed Tomography) scan — also called a CAT scan — is a special type of X-ray test that uses a computer to take many pictures of your body from different angles. The computer then combines all these pictures to create detailed cross-sectional images. Think of it like slicing a loaf of bread — doctors can see each "slice" of your body clearly, from skin to bone to organs.
Unlike a regular X-ray that only shows bones well, a CT scan shows soft tissues (like your liver, brain, or lungs), blood vessels, and bones all at the same time. This makes it a very powerful tool for diagnosing many conditions quickly and accurately.
When Does Your Doctor Recommend a CT Scan?
- To diagnose or rule out cancer, tumours, or cysts
- After accidents to check for internal injuries or fractures
- To evaluate chest pain or breathing problems (HRCT chest)
- To find kidney stones or other urinary problems
- To assess stroke, brain bleeding, or neurological symptoms
- For pre-surgery planning and post-treatment follow-up
- To evaluate abdominal pain or swelling
- Blood vessel diseases (CT Angiography)
Plain CT vs Contrast CT — What is the Difference?
A plain CT scan does not use any dye or injection. It is usually enough for checking bones, kidney stones, head injuries, or sinuses.
A contrast CT scan uses a special dye (contrast agent) that is injected into your vein before the scan. This dye helps blood vessels and some organs appear brighter in the images, making it easier to detect tumours, infections, or blockages. Your doctor will decide whether you need contrast based on your symptoms.
Is CT Scan Safe? How Long Does It Take?
Yes, a CT scan is safe for most people. It does use a small amount of X-ray radiation, but modern 128-slice scanners are designed to use the lowest possible radiation dose while still giving excellent image quality. The procedure is completely painless and usually takes only 5–15 minutes. You do not need to be admitted to hospital for a CT scan.
How to Prepare for a CT Scan
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing (metal-free)
- Remove jewellery, belts, and hairpins before the scan
- For abdomen/pelvis scans, you may need to fast for 4–6 hours
- If contrast is planned, inform the staff about any kidney problems or allergies
- Drink water as advised by our team prior to your appointment
- Bring your doctor's prescription and any previous scan reports

Frequently Asked Questions About CT Scan
Simple answers to your most common questions — explained clearly.
Both CT and MRI are imaging tests, but they work differently. A CT scan uses X-rays and is faster (5–15 minutes). It is better for bones, lungs, chest, and emergency cases. An MRI uses magnetic fields and is better for soft tissues like the brain, spinal cord, joints, and muscles. Your doctor will recommend which one is more suitable for your condition.
Modern CT scanners, including ours, use very low-dose radiation following the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle. The radiation from a CT scan is very small compared to the medical benefit it provides. For a healthy adult, a CT scan is considered safe. However, CT scans are generally avoided during pregnancy unless it is an emergency and medically necessary.
It depends on the type of CT scan. For head, chest, and bone scans, there is usually no need to fast. For abdomen, pelvis, or contrast CT scans, you are usually advised to fast for 4–6 hours before the scan. Our team will give you specific preparation instructions when you book your appointment, so please follow those carefully.
The actual scan time is very short — usually just 5 to 15 minutes. However, please allow 30–45 minutes total for your visit, including registration, preparation (changing clothes, removing metal items), and the scan itself. If contrast is needed, you may need to wait a few minutes after the injection before the scan begins.
Most CT scan reports at MRI Pune are ready within 2 to 4 hours. For urgent cases (like trauma or stroke), we try to deliver the report within 1 hour. You will receive a soft copy on WhatsApp and email. A hard copy with images on CD/film is also available from our centre. Routine reports are always available on the same day.
Yes. We are empanelled with most major insurance providers and TPA (Third Party Administrators) in India. We offer cashless facilities for eligible patients. Please carry your insurance card and policy details when you visit. You can also call us beforehand to confirm whether your specific insurance plan is accepted at our centre.
Yes, CT scans can be done on children when medically necessary. Our 128-slice scanner has paediatric protocols that use even lower radiation doses specifically designed for children. We understand that children may feel anxious, so our staff is trained to make them feel comfortable. In some cases, mild sedation may be needed for very young children to stay still — this will be discussed with parents beforehand.
